I wanted to create a site that has the same chaos and randomness of bathroom graffiti. There are a few sites that document graffiti, notably graffitproject.com, but I find their standard grid layout and social networking system removes the mystery and serendipity of graffiti which is a large part of what makes it so interesting.
It’s one thing to hear someone say “Sam is a douchebag.” It’s another to read it on a wall completely out of context and wonder: who’s Sam? what did Sam do to this person to warrant calling out that he’s a douchebag on a bathroom wall?
There’s something important about the private, yet public placing of this graffiti. It’s in a public place, but in a private area that can only be accessed by one person at a time, so it feels like a one-to-one dialogue. I tried to maintain that by keeping the immediate, sporadic interface. Because the divs are placed randomly, ever person who visits this site will encounter it in a different way.
Next steps:
- categorize by date posted so page doesn’t get overloaded
- update z-index by time posted (top/bottom placement)
